Dimitris Zafiropoulos, Ph.D., was an Oceanographer and Professor at the Deree College. He wrote a book in English language, that is an introduction into the fascinating world of dolphins and whales of the Greek Seas, as well as an identification and field guide.
It includes:
- Information on the classification, evolution and adaptations, ecology, intelligence and behavior of these amazing sea mammals.
- Information on their geographical distribution, on how to find, study and identify dolphins and whales that are regularly observed in Greek waters.
The book, «Dolphins and Whales of the Greek Seas», is the result of 12 years of field research, experiences and adventures.
An account of the first enthralling close encounter with the Striped Dolphins and the sighting of a Fin Whale at Corinthiakos Gulf, of the fieldwork with the Bottlenose Dolphins of Amvrakikos and North Evoikos Gulf, of the observations with the endangered Common Dolphins of the inland sea between the island of Lefkas and the Greek mainland, the Orei Channel and the Sporades islands. In this book are registered adventures and experiences by the writer and his companion, Livia Merlini, at the Greek Seas and Oceans. The book includes 50 photographs taken by the writer himself during the research cruises.

After that, he abandoned his profession as a chemical engineer and now lives in Sidney, Australia as a writer.
